Autograph letter signed : place not specified, to Mary Spence, 1871 Dec. 9.

Thanking her for her letter; saying "My mother has been in mortal illness these two months--which ended last Tuesday--leaving me--glad that she is at rest for she has had much pain, and for myself, not more sorry than I have been and since I saw the end was near. Also, I have had already so much pain in my life that less or more is of little court with me. All that I care for is the sense of strength and the power of feeling what is beautiful. Often those also have been lost to me of late years;" adding "please do not send me the flowers. This house is to be broken up."
